Greek MythologyEdit

Geryon (Ancient Greek: Γηρυών; gen.: Γηρυόνος), son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe and grandson of Medusa, was a fearsome giant who dwelt on the island Erytheia of the mythic Hesperides in the far west of the Mediterranean. A more literal-minded later generation of Greeks associated the region with Tartessos in southern Iberia.

Geryon was often described as a monster with human faces. According to Hesiod, Geryon had one body and three heads, whereas the tradition followed by Aeschylus gave him three bodies. A lost description by Stesichoros said that he has six hands and six feet and is winged; there are some mid-sixth century Chalcidian vases portraying Geryon as winged. Some accounts state that he had six legs as well while others state that the three bodies were joined to one pair of legs. Apart from these weird features, his appearance was that of a warrior. He owned a two-headed hound named Orthrus, which was the brother of Cerberus, and a herd of magnificent red cattle that were guarded by Orthrus, and a herder Eurytion, son of Erytheia. Eurystheus order Hercules to bring him Geryon's cattle as his 10th Labor.

God of War: Ghost of SpartaEdit

During his journey, Kratos runs head-on into enormous beasts known as Geryons, which serve Poseidon as guardians of Atlantis. These mythical creatures boasted several body parts, such as two sets of arms, and wielded gigantic metal orbs that shoot lightning. Geryons are vicious-looking hulking monsters, and arguably the hardest enemies in game. They have strong lightning attack up close, and could teleport right to Kratos and execute a quick punch with their electricity orb, which is very hard to dodge. However, by the end of battles with Geryons, Kratos is able to crush their skulls with the aforementioned lightning orbs.

TriviaEdit

  • A Geryon was created in resemblance to Atlas, who holds the world on his back. Curiosly, the name Atlantis itself is derivated from Atlas, since this titan was its original founder in mythology. Even though it was Poseidon who created Atlantis in the God of War myth, this is the most probable reason to Geryon's design.
  • Hercules' 10th Labor was to gather the cattle of Geryon.
  • During the development, Geryon was referred as the Shocker.
  • It is considered one of the most challenging enemies, along with the Keres Wraiths.
  • The orb that Geryon carry on his back appears to be a reference to Orthrus, the two-headed hound, brother of Cerberus, as the orb has two hound heads carved on it.
