Key of the Captain

Key of the Captain

I found an object from my past... it belonged to a boat captain of my homeland, one I once told you of. I had no personal connection to the captain, but my heartless acts against him have haunted me to this day...something Valhalla has seized upon.

–Kratos' upon finding the Key of the Captain in Valhalla.

The Key of the Captain, also called The Boat Captain's Key, is an object in God of War (2005) and God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla. It is a heart-shaped key that was owned by the unnamed Boat Captain. Though his key has a minor purpose in the series, it serves as an important part in Kratos' memory, as he would come to bitterly regret on sending the boat captain to his fate rather than saving him.

God of War (2005)[]

During the Hydra's rampage in the Aegean Sea, the boat captain is in possession of the key. After the beast was slain, Kratos claims the key for himself before callously sending the boat captain down the dead Hydra King's throat. Using the key, the Spartan gains access to the captain's quarters.

God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla[]

While in Valhalla, Kratos discovers and finds the key , which is beside a piece of his and Atreus' Jötnar Shrine. In his journal, he describes it as having belonged to the boat captain but that Kratos' cruel act on sending him to his death have haunted him to this day, which Valhalla has taken advantage on.
