Poseidon's Trident

In Greek mythology, one of the primary symbols of the sea god Poseidon was the trident. As his personal weapon, he could use it to create thunderstorms and strong tidal waves. It was created by the Cyclopes and given to Poseidon as a gift after his brother Zeus freed them from Tartarus.

In the God of War Series

During the Challenge of Poseidon in God of War, Kratos finds this magical trident within Poseidon's Chamber. With it, he can dive underwater, and can swim and breathe infinitely. The trident then becomes a much needed item to traverse the rest of Pandora's Temple. In God of War II, Kratos has the trident in his possession at the very beginning of the game, and uses it throughout the whole adventure. Kratos holds possession over Poseidon's Trident in God of War III, but needs the soul of a God before he can use the Trident, as the River Styx would be deadly to mortals and demigods alike.

In God of War III, Poseidon uses a giant crustacean trident in his battle with Kratos. He uses the weapon to control the Hippocampi, commanding them to attack Gaia and Kratos. He's also able summon blue lightning with the trident, both long range as short range as he uses it to strike Kratos with the electricity while he's on Gaia's head and to electrocute him and Gaia's hand when he's grabbed. The Trident was destroyed when Kratos forced Poseidon out of his giant watery form. He also used it to breath the first life into the first horse.

• Poseidon's Trident is the second most featured item (behind Athena's Blades) and the most featured artifact in the entire God of War series. It appears in God of War, Ghost of Sparta, God of War II and God of War III. With the exception of Ascension, Chains of Olympus and Betrayal, the trident has appeared in four of the seven games in the franchise. Once you take it out of the ground, it is never seen wielded by Kratos.
• Kratos uses the trident to swim even though he already had the Triton's Lance. It is possible that the lance was lost when Kratos fell from the sun chariot.
