In Norse Mythology[]
Reginn, often Anglicized as Regin or Regan, in Norse mythology, is a son of Hreiðmarr and foster father of Sigurd. His brothers are Fafnir and Otr. When Loki mistakenly kills Ótr, Hreiðmarr demands to be repaid with the amount of gold it takes to fill Ótr's skin and cover the outside. Loki takes this gold from the dwarf Andvari, who curses it and especially the ring Andvaranaut. Fafnir kills his father for this gold, but eventually becomes a greedy dragon. Reginn gets none of the gold, but he becomes smith to the king and foster father to Sigurd, teaching him many languages as well as sports, chess, and runes. He then sends Sigurd to kill his brother, Fafnir, in order to claim the gold. After Sigurd kills him, Fafnir's blood allows him to understand the language of birds. The birds give a warning to Sigurd that Reginn secretly plans on killing him and taking the treasure for himself. Consequently, Sigurd kills Reginn and keeps the treasure, though he himself eventually meets his own doom in the future.
Biography[]
Before God of War (2018)[]
Reginn was originally a Dwarven blacksmith who was turned into a dragon through both unknown means and reasons. A long time ago, he was captured by Mótsognir, the Dwarf King, and was forced to act as the Head Sentry of Konùnsgard, which the dragon took pride in. During his imprisonment, he would use his electric breath on the guards of Mótsognir's stronghold if they would do maintenance on the dragon shrines, which binds Reginn in place. It is stated that the dragon did it not to attack but to just the pass time, which is considered "cheeky". It was rumored that Reginn's presence had attracted the Dark Elves of Alfheim, but this is merely pure fiction. Even after Mótsognir disappeared without a trace, Reginn still remained imprisoned.
Achieving freedom[]
While Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir ventured into Konùnsgard, the dragon is seen still chained to his place. After fighting through many enemies and destroying all three of the dragon shrines, they reached the anchor that held Reginn and Atreus uses his knife to free Reginn, who flies away, now finally free.
Trivia[]
- Reginn is the original owner of the relic Hilt of Ridill. Like its owner after his draconization, the sword can channel the power of electricity.
